Day Twenty-Eight: "Texas Mountain Majesty" (29 January) 51 mi

It was a very windy start to day 28 of Bike Across America. Lois and I headed out stopping at Walmart where I use the bike pump to get a good air pressure in that back tire after all the flats I changed yesterday. We then proceeded west on Interstate 10 heading towards Balmorhea, Texas. On the way, about maybe 4 miles was when I got my first glimpse of mountains. It was a very impressive sight but seeing the mesas and seeing the hills before it was gradual, it didn't come out of nowhere per se. So being that it was maybe 50-51 mile day we took a lot of pictures. I don't remember where we were, what mileage but we were stopped by these two men who had a truck that had been waiting for us on the side of I-10. Paul and Rus were traveling back from Houston, Texas to their home in Prescott, Arizona and Rus had biked across the country before. Seeing us they had pulled over and offered me a Gatorade. It was great to see two people show such kindness. In an otherwise unremarkable day this will certainly be something I'll remember. We arrived in Balmorhea, Texas, which is basically a ghost town, and got some Mexican food. It's off to Van Horn, Texas tomorrow.

  1. What a wonderful thing you are doing !! We are cheering you on all the way! If you ride through Las Vegas and need a place to stay or just dinner, please give us a call.

We are knew to all this, as my son, Trey(9) was diagnosed this fall. Took a couple years to finally get that diagnosis, but now we're here and have answers... Well at least we know what we're dealing with! He has never met anyone with Tourette's and eventually hope too. He's a straight A student and amazing athlete, plays club baseball. (Short stop, pitcher, catcher). He has always done well in everything he tries and has many friends. His school backs him up all the way. We are very lucky! Eventually I would like for Trey to be able to educate people about this. As of now, he has experienced vocal tics (humming, coughing, throat clearing, little noises etc) and the physical tics ( shoulder, arm, and neck movements, tightening his muscles, head and jaw jerks etc).

He's a strong kids and has tons of support behind him! Sounds like you did/ do too! Good luck on your adventure and again, if you come through Vegas, your always welcome here! With enough notice, maybe I could get you some publicity too! Small town...... Big story !
    Have fun!

  2. Hello Amy,
Your son sounds like an amazing little boy! My son Colby (11) is also a super-star just like your son. He does well in school, plays sports, has a huge heart, and also has TS. Some friends of mine introduced me to Kyle's mother because we live in the same city and I've been following Kyle's story since. My heart is so full just hearing about his travels and how dedicated his family is to raising awareness. Colby just recently shared some of his personal reality living with TS as well as TS facts with other 5th graders at his school (155 students) and it was awesome! His tics have really exploded the last couple of months, so we are here, just like you! If i can be of any support to you or you just want to chat, please feel free. summerkuba@yahoo.com

    :) Summer
